I have a lifelong fascination with water. I grew up near the Pacific Ocean, swam competitively, and have traveled to the warm waters of Hawaii, Micronesia and Bali. I wanted to create art that speaks of a spiritual connection to water. More than my drawings or photography, my most important research was to be in water. Floating brought the movements of water back into my body. The physical sensations and understanding guided my hands in sculpting these reliefs. Working in the studio feels like I am dancing a stream or wave into being as the plaster and clay record my movements. Often the result is destroyed but it guides me how to improve my next attempt. The water and background sand or stone is all hand modeled. I laugh grinding dried clay into different grades of sand and gravel. Composing a tiny beach, deciding if it is a rock or a broken clam shell as I sculpt allows each sculpture to emerge as a whole, complete, just as land emerges from receding waters. |
